Our Autumn 1 curriculum at a glance. The accessible document can be downloaded below.

English

Our first two weeks strengthen Year 6 sentence construction, punctuation and grammar foundations. Children then study Can We Save the Tiger? and work towards a balanced discussion text. Through our whole-school writing journey, pupils predict and explore ideas, interrogate high-quality models, capture effective language and create carefully crafted writing for a clear reason and audience.

  • Daily reading, spelling and vocabulary practice
  • Guided reading and a shared class novel
  • Live teacher modelling, oral rehearsal and purposeful editing
  • Grammar, spelling and handwriting revisited through daily starters

Maths — Number

  • Place value to 10,000,000
  • Rounding and negative numbers
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Factors, multiples and prime numbers
  • Formal multiplication
  • Short and long division
  • Multi-step problem solving

Science — Living things and their habitats

  • Classifying living things into broad groups
  • Sorting animals by their characteristics
  • Using and creating classification keys
  • Classifying plants
  • The work of Carl Linnaeus
  • Helpful and harmful microorganisms

Religious Education

Branch 1: Creation and Covenant

Through Lighting the Path, we explore how faith and science can help us live in harmony with God, others and creation. Children study literary forms in Genesis, Creation and stewardship, Original Sin, the Fall, Baptism and covenant.

RHE and PSHE

Module 1: Created and Loved by God

  • Our God-given uniqueness and dignity
  • Caring for our bodies
  • Understanding emotions and personal boundaries

Geography — Be Ready

  • Using maps, atlases and digital mapping
  • Investigating geographical questions
  • Interpreting information
  • Communicating geographical findings clearly

Design and Technology

Electrical circuits

Children design and create a traffic-light system to help prevent accidents around school, applying their knowledge of circuits to a purposeful real-world problem.

Spanish — This Is Me!

We learn how to introduce and describe ourselves in Spanish, developing confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Wider curriculum

Across the week, children also learn through art, music, computing and PE. Lessons are planned to build knowledge, creativity, teamwork and confidence.

Learning at home

Homework

Homework is set each Tuesday on Mathletics and Emile and should be completed by the following Tuesday. Children may also receive tasks in their homework books. Short, regular practice is more effective than completing everything in one long session.

Reading

We encourage children to read every evening and discuss what they have read with an adult. Please sign the reading journal. Children also read with adults in school during the week. Pupils who read five or more times in a week can choose a reward from the Year 6 lucky-dip bag.

Times tables and spelling

Regular use of TT Rock Stars will strengthen any less-secure multiplication facts and support Year 6 arithmetic. Emile should be used to practise the spelling patterns and word families taught in class.

Celebrating success

  • Class Dojo: points recognise excellent effort, achievement, behaviour, our school rules and core values.
  • Star of the Week: two pupils are celebrated in Friday's assembly.
  • Saint of the Week: recognises a pupil who has lived out our core values.
  • Star Jar: celebrates excellent lunchtime behaviour and leads to a class reward.
  • Star of PE: recognises commitment to physical wellbeing and teamwork.
